Canva launches its own AI image model, built for posters and social posts
Canva has released Canva Craft, its first in-house image generator. It is built to produce readable text and layouts for things like menus, posters and social posts, and it is available to all Canva users.
If you make your own flyers, menus or social media posts in Canva, there's a new AI tool in the app. On 22 October Canva launched Canva Craft, the first image generation model it has built itself.
Canva says it works in two steps. First it plans the picture from your prompt, deciding where things go, how big they are and what the text should say. Then it creates the image, up to 2K resolution, in 30 shapes and sizes for different platforms. The company claims this gives more accurate details and text you can actually read, which is where many AI image tools still stumble. It also says you can make precise edits without disturbing the rest of the picture.
Unusually, Canva says it trained the model on designs from its own template library, such as posters, menus and infographics, rather than on photographs. Images can be turned into layered, editable designs with its Magic tool.
Craft is open to all Canva users through the Dream Lab tab, and will come to Canva's API later. TechCrunch reports no pricing for users and says cheaper, faster versions are on the way. Canva's claims about quality haven't been independently tested.
What this means for your business
If you already use Canva, it's worth trying Craft on something low-stakes, such as a social post, and checking the spelling and details before it goes out. Check Canva's licence terms too, so you know how you can use AI-made images commercially.
