Making Tax Digital for sole traders: where AI helps and where it doesn't

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has started for the biggest sole traders and landlords. Here is where AI can help with the paperwork, and where you still need the software and an accountant.

If you are searching for how making tax digital for a sole trader works with AI, start with who it affects. According to GOV.UK, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 (before expenses, based on their last tax return) must use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from 6 April 2026. From September 2026, HMRC will sign up anyone who is required to use it and has not done so themselves.

You will need software that works with the scheme to keep digital records, send quarterly updates and submit your return. An AI chatbot is not a substitute for that software. HMRC says it will not apply penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first year (2026 to 2027), though late returns and late payments still carry penalties.

Where AI can help is in the groundwork. Ask an assistant to turn a pile of receipt descriptions into a tidy list, suggest which expense category each might belong to, or draft a monthly reminder to log your sales. Keep customer names, bank details and your tax reference out of any AI tool, and check every figure yourself before it goes into your tax software.

What this means for your business

Use AI for tidying and reminders, not for tax decisions or for sending anything to HMRC. Check on GOV.UK whether you are required to join, choose compatible software, and ask your accountant about anything you are unsure of.
